Authority Magazine asked J-P Conte to name the one decision that changed everything. The interview was published July 30, 2026, and the decision he chose was made after business school.
A return to a large, established institution was the expected move. Instead, he was hired by a small private equity firm in San Francisco.
The Bank Years
He had begun his career at Chase Manhattan Bank in 1985, after graduating from Colgate University as the first in his family to attend college. Harvard Business School followed, and with it the decision the magazine asked about.
The bank, he told the magazine, “showed me what a predictable path looked like from the inside.”
The Safe Option
“Big firm, clear trajectory, a title that would make sense at a dinner party,” Conte said of the conventional route.
The founder and managing partner of his family office, Lupine Crest Capital, told the magazine that the people around him expected him to take it. “Nobody around me thought it was the obvious call,” he said of his own choice.
The Pull of the Smaller Firm
The firm was small and little known at the time, according to the interview. He was drawn by the chance to help build something and to have real ownership of the outcome.
“I felt something in that opportunity I couldn’t shake,” J-P Conte said.
Risk was the subject of a March 2026 Forbes Business Council column he wrote. “Smart risk requires understanding what you’re getting into while accepting incomplete information,” he wrote there.
Leadership as Willingness
No large organization stood behind him. Mistakes were his to own. He told the magazine he learned to be comfortable with uncertainty, to make sound calls under pressure and to own mistakes quickly. Trust had to be earned, and results had to be delivered without existing infrastructure.
“It taught me that leadership is about willingness,” he said.
“Respect the uncertainty, but don’t let incomplete information paralyze you,” he wrote in the same Forbes column.
Willingness, in his account, means being ready to go first when the outcome is unclear. “Leadership wasn’t about position. It was about responsibility,” Jean-Pierre Conte told the magazine.
Advice for Others
Conte said he chose his biggest career turns himself. When an opportunity seems right, he said, people should act.
“The worst outcome is usually that you learn something valuable,” he said.
His private equity career has since run for decades. Lupine Crest Capital was launched by JP Conte in March 2025, with a focus on healthcare, software, financial services and industrial technology.
